There are so many questions as to why children are abandoned in China. I've read books, heard rumors, and traveled to China. I still can't comprehend the situation. My heart still breaks for my adopted children and those still without a forever family. For those of you who are interested in learning more about orphans and the culture of China, I found a great book!
It is called "Silent Tears" by Kay Bratt. A few things came together for me after reading this. For instance, we discovered scars on Anna's legs from being strapped in a crib. I couldn't understand why she would be strapped to her crib if she couldn't even sit up! In the book, Kay Bratt says the babies' legs were tied down to keep them from kicking off their covers. Many of the orphanges don't have heat. Also, Anna would suck down her bottle in less than a minute, and then scream when it was gone. Since milk is scarce, the babies are only allowed a few gulps before the bottle is pulled away. The rest of the bottle gets fed to another baby.
Foster care is very common in China now. Teddy spent time with a foster family, and I can only hope that they loved him and took good care of him. He spent a year in an orphanage and is now back at the orphanage waiting for us. We don't know what to expect for his adjustment. But, I do know that we have a powerful God who is able to heal broken hearts. We don't have to know the answers. We will trust in his provision and live as a sacrifice for Him!
